For quite some time, my husband has been making do with the equivalent of Mongols for his SCA garb with the exception of one pair of velvet pants that were made by a friend. However as I work through the making of new garb for both of us in an attempt to be more period appropriate, I recognized that it was time to finally make him proper leggings.
At the reenactors market we were able to obtain some very thin nice wool in black that was too great for court pants but will not stand up to his heavy fighting. Recently at the snail well demo we were able to obtain some very heavy wool that I'm hoping will pass the test for heavy fighting.
While it would be appropriate for me to use the leggings for 14th-century, I'm still hesitant on creating my own pattern. Therefore I've opted to utilize the Tudor Tailor's pattern for leggings and I think this will make Dafydd more comfortable as well since they will actually work as a proper pair of pants. As recommended by the pattern I made a calico piece and it fit him almost ideally. Since he chooses to wear two pairs of socks to protect his feet, the ankle area needed to be expanded a little bit. Additionally we needed to expand the knee area by a little bit to accommodate the knee pads he'll need to wear for heavy fighting. Yesterday I cut the adaptive pattern out of the black wool and today we will be piecing it together to see if it fits all the issues we were concerned with. If it does, then I will be safe to go ahead and cut it out the red and he will be able to have these new leggings by our next event beginning of June.
