Ball Gown Commissioned

I’ve received a commission for a Civil War Ball Gown.  The client is a member of my local unit and he’s purchasing it for his Granddaughter.  She is this cute, energetic, and refined 15 year old who is very excited about attending the annual Cotillion.  Her Grandfather was pleasantly surprised by her desire to attend and called me wondering where he could obtain what she needed via rental or purchase.  I had no ideas as to where she could rent something appropriate and I’ve been scared off by some of the prices I’ve seen on Ball Gowns (albeit the ones I’ve seen are silk).  As the timing was short and her school related activities keep her quite busy, we’re unsure how interested she will remain.  So I offered my services for a more affordable option.
Her Grandmother was able to find her a very affordable option for a corset here.  This was much better than me attempting to make one for her and much less expensive than what I’ve seen available elsewhere.  The cut and materials of the corset are wonderful and it is made with all the same materials I’ve used on my corsets but I don’t think I could buy the steel for the price they are selling this for.  I am actually thinking of ordering myself one instead of making my next one.
I had the opportunity to fit her for the lining this past weekend and it went relatively well considering the original measurements she gave me were before she had obtained her corset.  I had to take in the test lining everywhere except the bust so we’re off to a good start.  I’ll need to correct the top edge of the bodice in the front as the alterations made an odd transition from the shoulders and it would put the bodice too far off the shoulders to be comfortable (or right).
I brought along several of my synthetic  fabrics that pass a “5 foot test” for her to choose from and provided her some design options.  I don’t think she was prepared to have input on her dress but she has made some very nice selections.

The fabric I found on discount ($1 per yard) and will make a very fashionable first ball gown without “breaking the bank”.  Plan is to put together the bodice this week and refit this weekend (just in case).  She’s opted for the teal base with the sheer being overlaid at the center front and used as a large puff sleeve.  I’m thinking I could use the sheer as a ruched trim on the skirt too if I have the time.
My personal completion deadline is June 12th as she needs to wear it June 15th.  This gives me a couple of days for the unforeseen.  She’ll be borrowing the remaining undergarments she needs from me and if she remains interested I’ll work with her family to finish outfitting her appropriately.
